NETWORKED BIOPHOTONICS AND MICROFLUIDICS

We design a technology to measure and infer biological systems by combining optics, fluidics, chemistry/materials, information science, and life science/medicine. Using our platforms, we aim to discover phenomena and elucidate mechanisms in medical and biophysical sciences and address healthcare unmet needs by enabling next-generation diagnostics and synthesize molecular/cellular functions beyond nature. Currently, we study mammalian and bacterial cells, EVs and their interactions and XX-oids in pooled formats. We are an interdisciplinary team consisting of experts in optics, microfluidics, bioengineering and biology, informatics, and chemistry.

Everyone in the lab starts from one expertise, learns the art of close collaboration across disciplinary boundaries (inevitable), and tackles important problems. If you are interested in acquiring sharp expertise, learning to think beyond expertise to find value, realizing your seed ideas and delivering them to the world, or any of these, please contact us. I’m always on the lookout for motivated and talented individuals from around the globe to join us and unlock the possibilities of invention and innovation.

We officially accept applications of postgraduates (see opening positions for postdoc), and MS/PhD students (any background!) at the University of Tokyo. Please email Sadao (sadaota at solab.rcast.u-tokyo.ac.jp), to discuss your research interests and motivation to join us, and attach your CV. At OTA Lab, we believe in equal opportunities and rights for everyone. We encourage eager minds to apply as early as they can since it makes easier to arrange financial and administration situations.
